C2c Project Space is pleased to announce Project 9, featuring artists Martha Clippinger and Mel Prest. Their respective practices share an interest in the experience of color, line, structure, and form. Both artists also focus on the qualities of the light of the environments where each work has been created, and pay specific attention to the effect of this illumination on the perception of these afore mentioned formal aspects. Furthermore, it is a mutual concentration on the humanness of their respective creative processes that more fully aesthetically binds their output through a certain shared poetic character.
Their willingness to reveal this humanness, to show the fallibility of the hand, is manifested by a lack of acute precision and the absence of completely straight lines and perfectly smoothed surfaces. This facet of the work contrasts with our experience of the goods created by our contemporary machine made and computer dictated mass production oriented society. Yet it is this wabi sabi element of the work that provides its lyrical nature, and allows it to transcend a state of material being and become something greater.
The exhibition will open with an artist reception (both artists in attendance) on Saturday, February 6 from 6-9pm. It will run through March 6 with gallery hours on Sundays from 12-5pm. c2c project space is at 1695 18th Street #413 in San Francisco (cross streets are Carolina and Arkansas).
